Background
Chalobah, who previously had a career at Chelsea, will now face a new challenge at Como 1907, a club seeking to rebuild its reputation in Serie A. With his background at the Cobham academy and experience of playing in the top league, Chalobah is expected to contribute to the team's development and become an important part of Como's long-term project.
Why this is important
Trevoh Chalobah's decision to join Como 1907 marked the end of a long spell at Chelsea, where he developed endurance as one of the key qualities of his career. With experience playing at a high level, Chalobah is expected to make a significant contribution to Como in Serie A, especially in terms of leadership and stability at the back. It also shows how young players can progress through challenges at big clubs before finding the right place to shine.

Trevoh Chalobah has ended his nearly 20-year association with Chelsea by joining Como 1907 this summer. In the course of his career at his childhood club, Chalobah learned one very valuable thing — resilience. The 27-year-old defender's career reflects how he managed to realize his dream of playing for Chelsea while facing many obstacles.
From crying in the car because he felt he wasn't good enough while playing alongside Mason Mount and Declan Rice at the Cobham academy, to being left out of first team training as part of the "bomb squad" under coach Enzo Maresca in 2024, Chalobah continued to rise and become a regular starter at Chelsea. He was recalled from a loan spell at Crystal Palace in January 2025 and ultimately made 151 appearances for Chelsea before completing a £31m transfer to Serie A side Como under manager Cesc Fabregas last week.
Chalobah was brought in to provide leadership and demonstrate what he considers to be a strength in his football — namely immense resilience. "That's one of my attributes and skills, bouncing back from things and not letting anything get to me," Chalobah said while at Como's pre-season camp in Teddington, southwest London. "Not only in football, but in life, there are things that sometimes happen that are out of your control."
Chelsea's change of ownership in 2022 from Roman Abramovich to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital triggered the sale of almost all players and new signings that threw the situation at the club into chaos. However, Chalobah feels no bitterness or regret, considering he achieved his highest appearance total for Chelsea in a season last year with 47 appearances before leaving his boyhood club. "I always wanted to play for Chelsea, whatever the circumstances, I always believed that I could do it," he continued. "I'm grateful for every obstacle, every challenge, every trophy I've won. I've won a few things there and it's a club where I've grown and learned a lot."

Now, Chalobah begins a new chapter at Como, not the first time he has played abroad, having previously spent part of the 2020-21 season with Lorient in France's top league. He followed in the footsteps of his older brother Nathaniel, who once played for Napoli, by choosing the less common route for English players to move to Europe. Chalobah said it was no coincidence that it was Thomas Tuchel, whom he faced at Lorient after the German joined Paris St-Germain, who picked him and handed him his Chelsea debut. Five years later, Tuchel promises that if any defender drops out of England's World Cup squad, Chalobah will be the first to be called up.
While on holiday in New York, Chalobah received the call to join Tuchel's squad for his first World Cup as a replacement for the injured Tino Livramento. "This story was written before I was born," Chalobah said. "He's the one who gave me my debut at Chelsea and the same manager who called me up for the World Cup at the last minute. I believe that certain things are meant to happen and I'm grateful for that. Of course, it's all thanks to him and I'm very happy."
The tournament ended with a semi-final defeat by Argentina before the team took the bronze medal with a 6-4 win over France in their final match. "No one wants to be third. You are just one step away from the final," he said. "It was definitely difficult for the players. We fought hard and believed that we could win it. And yes, we were very close. But we learned from this and are proud of what we have done and achieved."
Now, Chalobah is starting a new chapter at Como, where manager Fabregas was one of Chelsea's stars when Chalobah was still in the academy. "I remember how demanding he was of the young players. So yeah, I knew him well," explained Chalobah, recalling those early training sessions. Fabregas has led Como to a remarkable rise from Serie B to the Champions League in just two seasons and convinced Chalobah to join amid interest from Inter Milan. "He has a big role," Chalobah added. "He explained what he wanted, the way he saw the club and how I could contribute - with a lot of experience, physicality and leadership. It wasn't a decision that was taken overnight, it was a very thoughtful and difficult decision. But I believe, as I said, in the direction of this club and spoke with the manager, and wanted to be part of this story. I'm very excited for this new chapter in the beautiful story I've had so far.

What happened next
After joining Como, Chalobah is expected to immediately adapt to the Serie A style of play and have a positive impact on the defense. With experienced manager Cesc Fabregas, there is hope that Chalobah can develop his skills further and help the team achieve better results this season. In addition, his performance at Como could open up opportunities to return to the attention of big clubs in the future, especially ahead of the next transfer window.
