Tottenham Open Talks with Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky over New Contract

Bagikan:

Tottenham Hotspur are negotiating a new contract with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who played an important role in the team's survival in the Premier League last season.

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Antonin Kinsky over a new, better contract. The Czech goalkeeper was an integral player in Tottenham's bid to stay in the Premier League last season, starting all seven games under coach Roberto De Zerbi and helping the team stay in the top flight.

Now, the club is seeking to tie Kinsky down to a new, more lucrative contract, one that would recognize his importance to the club and his new status as the Spurs' starting goalie. Tottenham have just recruited Martin Dubravka as an experienced reserve goalkeeper, while the future of long-serving main goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remains in doubt.

Kinsky joined Spurs in January 2025 from Slavia Prague on a long-term contract with five years remaining. Initially, he was a backup to Vicario, playing sporadically in the 2024โ€“25 season when Vicario was injured.

Last season, Kinsky only started twice in the League Cup under previous coach, Thomas Frank, and was then pulled into the first team by Frank's replacement, Igor Tudor, when Spurs played Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 of the Champions League. However, he lost his footing and was withdrawn after 17 minutes when Spurs were 3-0 down.

However, when De Zerbi took over, and Vicario required hernia surgery, Kinsky became first choice for the remainder of the season and put in a series of impressive performances that helped Spurs surpass West Ham United to stay in the Premier League.

If Kinsky's future at the club can be confirmed with a new contract, this suggests that Vicario may leave the club next summer.

Analysis by Tottenham correspondent Jay Harris suggests this is a remarkable comeback story for Kinsky. Everyone was shocked when Igor Tudor pulled Kinsky off the pitch after 17 minutes of Tottenham's humiliating defeat against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. Kinsky slipped several times and was a factor in Tottenham's defeat, who were trailing 3-0. At that time, it seemed as if his career at Spurs was over.

In the space of three months, the former Czech Republic U-21 international has changed the narrative. Kinsky was given a chance to redeem himself sooner than expected after Vicario underwent hernia surgery. He started five consecutive games under Roberto De Zerbi and then remained in his place even when Vicario recovered in time for Spurs' final two league games.

Kinsky's quality on the ball is undoubted, but he stood out with some excellent saves against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United. His right-handed save to keep Sean Longstaff from scoring what would have been a stoppage-time winner for Leeds was crucial for Spurs who ultimately avoided relegation by two points.

Kinsky told a group of journalists, including The Athletic, after the final day win against Everton that the hardest part of the season was spending "six months on the bench". The new contract is a worthy reward and suggests that he may have permanently replaced Vicario as number one goalkeeper. The Italian goalkeeper still has two years remaining on his contract and The Athletic previously reported there was uncertainty over his long-term future. The best option for Spurs might be to sell the Italian international and put all their faith in Kinsky.
