Fiorentina have officially signed defender Viery Fernandes Santos Lopes from Gremio for a reported fee of €15 million, including add-ons. 'I am very honored to wear this jersey,' he said. The Brazilian player flew in yesterday to undergo medical tests and sign a five-year contract. A brief statement from the club confirmed that they had completed a permanent transfer from Gremio.

Viery looks very enthusiastic about joining Fiorentina. "It's very exciting for me to be the first signing of the season," Viery said on the club's official website. "I worked very hard at Porto Alegre and gave everything for Gremio, so now I enjoy this special moment. I feel very honored to wear the Fiorentina jersey."

He scored two goals from the back position in 27 competitive games for Gremio last season, after coming through their youth academy and being promoted to the senior squad in 2025. Viery, who only turned 21 in January, has been linked with various clubs, including Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. He is a central defender, but can also play on the right side of defence.

"I studied how Sergio Ramos plays in defense, I liked Paolo Maldini's videos, and today I was able to appreciate Virgil Van Dijk's playing style," he added. "There are other players I also observe and find things about each of them to appreciate, so I can try to improve my own game. I am a defender with good stamina, makes use of my physical strength, and likes to participate in the game from the back."

Viery revealed that he could not watch Brazil's victory in the last 32 of the World Cup against Japan because he was flying to Europe at the time, but he supported the team coached by Carlo Ancelotti. "I'm confident we'll get to the Finals."
