This victory was also Real Madrid's second in the last eight meetings with Barcelona, and Mourinho's return to this match seemed like a nightmare for the defending champions. More importantly for Mourinho, Mbappe's brace in Real Madrid's 2-1 win halted Barcelona's unbeaten run in nine domestic matches, while delivering a crucial win at Camp Nou.
If Real Madrid loses this match, Barcelona will have a significant nine-point lead. However, this result has now changed the position at the top of La Liga, leaving Mourinho's side just three points behind their rivals. "In my view, Real Madrid doesn't play to win at Camp Nou; Real Madrid plays to win in La Liga," said Mourinho. "We can win with luck, but we win with calm and by all rights," he added.
Mourinho also praised the hard work of his players, "This is a very strong group. Everyone worked very hard. Everyone was ready to win. When you win, the credit goes to the players. But when you lose, the burden of blame lies with the coach. That's why we see coaches being fired every week."
Mourinho has now recorded six wins and six defeats in El Clasico during his two tenures. He emphasized that his team has a combination of talents in midfield that provides balance in defense and quality in attack. "We've beaten some teams by four goals or more, but this is Barcelona, and the players were outstanding. We need to continue like this and not get too carried away after this win."
Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick, acknowledged this defeat without giving many reasons. He admitted that his team was shorthanded after a grueling few weeks. "We lost freshness," he said. "It's not easy for our players. We have to recover well, train well and respond from this defeat. In big games, the little things are very important and determine the result, and today, it was not on our side. I saw that we were not fresh today and this is what we have to change.",
