Rayan Cherki, who is a talented young player, has shown his abilities at Manchester City and the French national team. With his new role in midfield, he is expected to be a key player who supports attack and defense, and contributes to the team's success this season.
Why this is important
Manchester City's 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace shows how important Rayan Cherki's role is in the midfield. By scoring two goals, Cherki not only increased the team's confidence, but also strengthened his position as a key midfielder under the direction of Enzo Maresca. His solid performances at the club could have a positive impact on this season, especially in the context of the league competition.
Main Points

- Has a new midfield option at Manchester City appeared for Enzo Maresca?.
Rayan Cherki has shown impressive form at the start of the 2026-27 season with Manchester City. In his role as number ten midfielder, the French international managed to score four goals and provide two assists in eight appearances in all competitions. One of his best performances was in Manchester City's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, where he scored two goals.
This impressive start to the season saw Cherki get a new role in the midfield of the French national team coached by Zinedine Zidane. In the match against Türkiye, he featured in a deeper midfield position, helping to set the tempo of the game by completing 68 of his 74 passes. His performance was also characterized by his ability to move the ball which opened up gaps for the French team to attack.
Cherki not only contributed to ball possession, but also showed threat through his dribbling. He did three progressive carries with a total distance of 77.3 meters. In the defensive phase, Cherki won five of nine ground duels, showing that he has the complete playing ability to operate in a deeper midfield position.
Zinedine Zidane, ahead of France's next match against Belgium, revealed that he really appreciates Cherki's abilities, especially in the off-the-ball aspect of the game. Zidane stated, "Yes, I would like to play with him. He is a real player. However, what interests me most is what he can do without the ball. He can receive the ball between the lines and make incredible passes. Two or three times, when he plays vertically, it can be immediately effective."
While Rayan Cherki's sample of appearances in deeper midfield positions for France is still small, his performance against Türkiye showed a lot of promise. Zidane's praise for Cherki is also noteworthy, considering that the coach was once one of the best players of his generation.
Looking at Rayan Cherki's potential to play in a similar position at Manchester City to that of Zidane in the French national team, there is an argument to be made. Cherki was able to control the tempo of the match from a deeper midfield position. We saw glimpses of this ability last season under Pep Guardiola, where Cherki at times resembled Bernardo Silva when playing deeper in midfield.
With Enzo Fernandez, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson in midfield, Manchester City does have many quality options. However, if Cherki plays in a deeper midfield position, he offers something different compared to other midfielders. This will also allow him to have the ball more often, which of course will be a positive thing for Manchester City. This is an interesting consideration for Enzo Maresca, if nothing else.
What happened next
With his impressive performance, Rayan Cherki will likely continue to gain the trust of Enzo Maresca to play in a deeper midfield position. This could be a turning point in Manchester City's game strategy, especially when facing strong teams in the league. Apart from that, Cherki is also expected to be able to contribute more at international level with the French national team under Zinedine Zidane.
