Rafael Leao admitted he 'prefers to say goodbye on the pitch in front of the fans' and insisted his 'love for AC Milan will never end' as he prepares to fly to Galatasaray. A deal has been reached between Milan and Galatasaray for a reported fee of €43-45 million plus €2 million in bonuses, as well as a 20-25 per cent cut on future sales. Leao also received an offer from Aston Villa, but the offer did not satisfy the Rossoneri or himself, who is expected to earn €12 million per season in Istanbul.
Leao was supposed to be at the San Siro tonight and get the chance to say goodbye to the fans after Milan's 2-0 win over Venezia, but that didn't happen and his farewell remained private. "Yes, this is a difficult moment," Leao told Sky Sport Italia. "I say goodbye to my teammates after seven years with them. The club has always helped me, helped me to grow and made me understand what it is at a high level, representing a big club like Milan. This moment has come to say goodbye. I prefer a different greeting, to say goodbye on the pitch once again in front of the fans, those who have always supported me especially in the bad times. I will remain in the history of the club, because I know what I have achieved here. I will keep in my heart all those who have helped me, who I can only thank them. This is life, we learn, we say goodbye. This is not a love affair that ends, because the love I have for Milan will never end.
What is Leao's happiest memory with the Milan jersey? "When you win trophies, these are the things that stay with you. I will remember them until the end." During his tenure, Leao only bagged two titles, namely the Scudetto and Supercoppa Italiana, although he was also named Serie A Player of the Year once after winning the title. Does Leao want to stay at San Siro, or was the decision to move this summer forced on him? "This is the moment when you have to make a decision. Milan is still Milan, a team of a high level, with a great coach, and although we haven't spent much time together, Amorim is very good and can lead Milan to achieve important things. He plays the kind of football I like. I will continue to watch Milan from afar and wish them all the best."
Is there a special thank you that Leao would like to convey to someone? "Everyone who represents Milan and helped me. This is life, an era comes to an end, although Milan will continue to do extraordinary things for its fans. The important thing is that Milan is at the top and continues to win. I wish them all the best."
Did he shed tears? "I cried a lot, naturally, there has to be emotion in moments like this," concluded Leao. Galatasaray directors arrived at the airport in Milan this evening by private jet, where they will take Leao to Türkiye to start this new adventure.
What happened next
After this transfer, AC Milan needs to find a suitable replacement to fill the void left by Leao. With the Serie A season still long, this decision will greatly influence the team's strategy in facing the upcoming matches. Meanwhile, Leao is expected to adapt quickly at Galatasaray and make a positive contribution to the Turkish league.
