The Moroccan football team enters the 2026 World Cup with high hopes after their historic performance at Qatar 2022. They have a strong squad led by Achraf Hakimi and face tough competition in Group C.

The Moroccan football team enters the 2026 World Cup carrying a burden heavier than just hope. This is a legacy. Four years ago in Qatar, they became the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals, beating Spain and Portugal before losing to France. That's not a coincidence. It is a statement. Now, with the tournament expanded to 48 teams in the United States, Canada and Mexico, every major team faces a tougher and longer road. Morocco is no exception.

Morocco Football Team Squad for 2026:

Full squad: Bounou, El Kajoui, Tagnaouti, Hakimi, Mazraoui, Aguerd, Saïss, Attiat-Allah, El Yamiq, Aminu, Amrabat, Ounahi, Bouaddi, El Khannouss, Benhaima, Brahim Díaz, Ziyech, Boufal, Dari, Talbi, Ayoub El Kaabi, Soufiane Rahimi.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Morocco Football Team:

Achraf Hakimi, who recently won the UEFA Champions League and is now Africa's most decorated player with 19 first-team trophies, leads the team from right-back. He has the pace and attacking threat that no defender should have. Yassine Bounou's bravery in Qatar 2022 is still etched in football memories, and Morocco will rely on his experience again at crucial moments. Brahim Díaz provides creativity in midfield.

The squad retains a strong core of the 2022 generation, including Sofyan Amrabat, Azzedine Ounahi, Noussair Mazraoui, and Nayef Aguerd, giving Ouahbi a battle-trained backbone. Lille's 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who switched alliances after representing France at youth level, is also in the squad and shows serious long-term intentions.

Qualifying went smoothly. Atlas Lions navigated their CAF group matches without losing a single game. They collected 24 points from eight wins, no draws and no defeats, beating Niger, Tanzania, Zambia, Congo and Eritrea. Domination.

However, real problems exist. Walid Reragui stepped down as coach in March 2026, just months before the tournament, citing the need for a new approach. His replacement, Mohamed Ouahbi, is a shrewd operator but has very little experience at senior level. Much of Ouahbi's work was done in the youth setup at Anderlecht and with Morocco's U-20 team, which he guided to the 2025 U-20 World Cup title.

What an achievement. However, managing Hakimi and a senior dressing room on the biggest stage is a different proposition altogether. Youssef En-Nesyri, who scored the decisive goal against Portugal in the 2022 quarter-finals, is not in the squad, removing the option of an experienced forward from the attack. Up front, Morocco's options feel thinner compared to their midfield depth.

Group C pits them against Brazil, Scotland and Haiti. Their opener on June 13 against Brazil in New Jersey asked the toughest questions early on. The pressure is starting to feel.

Best XI and formation:

Best XI: Bounou; Mazraoui, Aguerd, Saïss, Hakimi; Amrabat, Ounahi; El Khannouss, Brahim Díaz, Ziyech; Ayoub El Kaabi.

Ouahbi prefers a 4-2-3-1 formation built on quick transitions, combining youth with senior experience.

Tournament Predictions:

Quarterfinals, and maybe further. Morocco should make it through Group C by finishing second behind Brazil, well ahead of Scotland and Haiti. The expanded format suits a squad of this quality, giving them lighter Round of 32 matches to build a rhythm before things get serious.

The coach's uncertainty and the loss of En-Nesyri are real concerns that could cost them against a top-eight team. However, the Moroccan football team has earned the right to be taken seriously, and ignoring them now would be as costly a mistake as underestimating them in Qatar.
