World Cup 2026: Folarin Balogun's Decision Could Have Potential Consequences

Laura McAllister, vice president of Uefa, revealed that there was a big risk of a "cesspit" or chaos due to political interference in the world of football after Folarin Balogun, the United States national team striker, avoided being banned from playing in the 2026 World Cup. Balogun, who was previously expected to be suspended for the round of 16 match against Belgium after receiving a red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina, was instead allowed to play after his one-match ban was overturned by FIFA thanks to the intervention of US President Donald Trump. FIFA's decision drew widespread criticism, especially after Trump claimed he had asked for a review of the decision because he "didn't think it was a violation". Uefa, as European football's governing body, expressed its disbelief at the decision which it deemed "unexpected, incomprehensible and unjustified". McAllister, who is a former Wales international and has been at Uefa since 2023, expressed his concerns about the implications of Balogun's decision and Trump's involvement in this. "You are creating a very dangerous situation for the future because anyone can appeal," he said in an interview with BBC Radio Wales. "Any political leader would potentially pick up the phone and say there's a precedent for changing the punishment given to a player, and I think that's very dangerous." Furthermore, McAllister emphasized that Uefa has clear guidelines regarding applicable competition rules, and all participants know the rules and regulations that apply. "Creating an environment that could undermine the enforcement of punishments on the ground, whether right or wrong, is very dangerous," he added. ![Image](https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/3840/cpsprodpb/4a80/live/3118b8a0-7a1d-11f1-bee8-53ce494e1abc.jpg) In a statement on platform Uefa also insisted that its intervention to overturn the suspension at the tournament "crossed a line that should not be crossed". Sepp Blatter, the former FIFA president who was replaced by Infantino after a corruption scandal in 2016, wrote in X that "football must not become an arena for political power". McAllister added that Infantino was in a difficult position, but that politics in football, especially at a global level, is very different from what is usually acceptable and tolerated. "In a normal environment, there would be doubts about Infantino's leadership, but football is not a normal environment," he said. McAllister also noted that heading into this World Cup, it's natural that Infantino would want to make sure Trump supports this major tournament, which effectively funds everything FIFA does. However, he considered that this situation had gone too far. Despite Balogun's involvement, the USA was eliminated from the tournament after losing 4-1 to Belgium. After the match, Belgian midfielder Nicolas Raskin stated that his team felt there was "an injustice" regarding Balogun's ban being overturned. The Belgian national team's official Instagram account also appeared to mock the situation by posting an image of striker Romelu Lukaku holding his ear with the caption "cancel this". --- ## Related Articles 1.
