Musical Times Continues Undefeated with Victory

According to Skysports.

Background

Musical Times, trained by Charlie Appleby, has shown excellent form on the race track, including wins in the May Hill Stakes and now the Fillies' Mile. The horse is expected to become a major contender in major races in the future, following in the footsteps of other successful horses from the Appleby stable.

Why this is important

Musical Times' dramatic win in the Fillies' Mile confirmed her status as one of the most promising young horses in horse racing today. By maintaining his unbeaten record, Charlie Appleby's horse is showing that he has the potential to compete at the highest level, including the possibility of participating in future prestigious races such as the 1000 Guineas.

  • Newmarket: Musical Times stays unbeaten with Fillies' Mile victory for Charlie Appleby with William Buick on board.

Musical Times managed to overcome various obstacles on the track and maintain her unbeaten record in the bet365 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket. The Charlie Appleby-trained young colt has shown top-class potential by winning his first two races on the July Course and at Yarmouth, and completed his hat-trick with an easy win in the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster last month. The mare who previously won the 1000 Guineas title, Desert Flower, also scored a double in the May Hill-Fillies' Mile two years ago for Appleby and jockey William Buick, and now Musical Times is the favorite at odds of 4/9 to follow in those footsteps.

The race wasn't exactly easy for the odds-on crowd, with Buick struggling to find a gap, but once the opportunity arose he quickly accelerated the colt to beat Aidan O'Brien's Haven by one length. Appleby also expressed his happiness, "I'm very happy and after two furlongs we just have to hold our breath a bit and see what happens, but William is a class jockey in this race and he knows it himself. He just tried to find a gap and when he did, this horse just accelerated well."

"Others were trying to beat one horse – our horse, but credit to him and William who managed to hang on, and when he found a gap, he did what it took. When he got on track next to the horse who ended up second, he was sure to attack the climb well and one thing we saw was he always ran strong right to the end. He's got to work hard there but he'll learn a lot and what I liked about him today was that he set off well and is still learning."

Appleby added: "The mare division this year was very strong and there were some good mares, but they all seemed to be sprinters whereas this horse was able to cover a mile well. He was seeing the climbs for the first time and probably wanted an easier surface, and it would be great if they could see the climbs. But there was no chance for him to see that as he came down and you could see his gait was a little better on the firmer surface than at Doncaster and not being able to see the climbs. But I think this is a performance you can judge a bit better."

Musical Times is now the favorite at odds of 5/2 from 4/1 at BOYLE Sports for next year's 1000 Guineas and Appleby plans to take the colt over a proven course for the filly's opening classic race of the year with a training run at the Craven meeting. Appleby added: "There's no doubt he needed his class to take him home today, but from what we saw, I think he's rightfully one of the favorites for the Guineas. He's done it over a mile and is coping well. We'll keep him for now and maybe just come here for some practice on the track and then head to the Guineas, hopefully. I'd say he's a real miler horse at the moment and he's got a lot of natural pace and is able to accelerate. Maybe he can get further distances and you don't always need to be a real mile and a half horse at the moment. Epsom, sometimes if you are a miler who can get one quarter length you can probably finish the race well.”

While Appleby has some doubts about the possibility of a middle distance for Musical Times, O'Brien feels Haven will thrive at the distance next season after the Dundalk maiden-winning filly settled well in the group and finished second. O'Brien said, "She's young, developing well, and I'm pleased with her performance. We always thought she was a good horse and she'll be outstanding next season. She's improving and the other fillies are more mature, so we couldn't be happier. I think she's probably an Oaks horse, at a mile and a mile and a half. She'll be a middle distance horse."

What happened next

With the hat-trick already achieved, the focus is now on how Musical Times will continue its performance in the coming season. Trainer Charlie Appleby will likely be planning the next steps for this horse, in the hope of following in the footsteps of previously successful horses who have excelled in major races.
