SC Freiburg midfielder Maximilian Eggestein was in a very good mood after the dramatic 2-1 win over FC Schalke 04 on Sunday evening. The 29-year-old opened the scoring in the tenth minute, as his team overcame a second-half red card and regained top spot in the Bundesliga standings.
Eggestein played the full 90 minutes and recorded an impressive distance of 12.26 kilometers. As vice-captain of Freiburg, he recorded two shots, including one goal, completed 75 percent of the 40 passes attempted, and was involved in 14 individual duels. This performance shows just how important Eggestein's role is in the team, something he discussed in a recent interview about what makes the perfect Freiburg player.
Speaking to journalists in the mixed zone after the win, Eggestein was asked about their UEFA Conference League opener against Czech side FK Jablonec on Thursday evening. He seemed a little surprised when a journalist mentioned that tickets might still be available for the European game. "Is it true?" Eggestein asked. After journalists confirmed this, the Freiburg midfielder issued a spontaneous invitation to supporters. "Then everyone must come!" Eggestein replied. "I don't think it's often that there are some tickets still available for one of our games. This is a good opportunity to come to the stadium."
“We knew that we would have a tough away game after that,” Eggestein added. "So I think it's very important to start well in the Conference League, especially because there are only six games, compared to the eight we usually have in the Europa League. Therefore, these home games are very important."
Before focusing on European competition, Eggestein had plenty of reasons to celebrate Sunday's win. Freiburg managed to get three points despite having to play with ten men after Yuito Suzuki's red card in the 64th minute, and won through a decisive goal from substitute Keisuke Gotō in the 85th minute. The decisive goal was obtained thanks to two players introduced by coach Julian Schuster in the second half. Vincenzo Grifo, introduced in the 83rd minute, provided an accurate pass from the left which Gotō headed in from close range.
Grifo's decisive contribution also saw him scoop the Player of the Match award from Get German Football News, while Eggestein took home the official Player of the Match award awarded by the Bundesliga. While speaking in the mixed zone, Eggestein was amused by Gotō's enthusiastic celebration. "He must have celebrated very well, what a good fellow he is!" joked Eggestein. "And we don't need to talk about Vinci's right foot. I think that was something to highlight today. A great pass and a great finish."
The interview then turned humorous when a journalist asked Eggestein whether red-haired players were better at heading the ball than those with dark hair. "I've never had red hair, so I don't know," Eggestein answered. "I don't know how it feels." When reporters pointed out his teammate's header achievement, Eggestein remained skeptical. “I don't know,” he laughed. "I think we've also had a few black-haired players score headers."
The win capped a very memorable afternoon for Eggestein, who earlier opened the scoring after Loris Karius saved Matthias Ginter's header from a Freiburg corner. Schuster's side now have little time to celebrate their return to the top of the Bundesliga before turning their attention to European competition. Thursday's meeting with Jablonec gives Freiburg the opportunity to carry their domestic momentum into the Conference League. And, as Eggestein stated, supporters who are still considering attending the game are more than welcome to join the event.
