Manchester City coach, Enzo Maresca, firmly denied the notion that all the titles won by the club under the ownership of the Arab Emirates (UAE) had been tarnished due to allegations of financial misconduct. In a press conference ahead of the match against Liverpool in the sixth week of the Premier League on October 9, Maresca appeared before the media for the first time since Manchester City was declared to have violated financial regulations for nine consecutive seasons between 2009 and 2018.
Maresca, who was previously Pep Guardiola's assistant, came with a positive and confident attitude in answering various questions. When asked if he would have accepted the offer to replace Guardiola if he had known in advance about the decision, Maresca answered emphatically, "100% definitely would have accepted. I understand the reason many of you are here, but the only thing I can say is that the legal process is still ongoing. At the moment, I completely believe in the club. I believe in Manchester City because I believe in the people here. That is also the reason I joined this club. There is no other club in the world that I would like to coach more than this, and I am very happy and proud to be at here."
Manchester City itself has lodged an appeal following the decision which stated they had breached various financial regulations during the period mentioned. This decision sparked a lot of debate regarding the validity of the success achieved by the club since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) in 2008, including achieving a treble in the 2022-2023 season.
Maresca emphasized that the success achieved cannot be taken lightly. He stressed, "There is not the slightest doubt about that achievement. The last time I worked here was the season when we won the treble. I know very well how hard the players, coach and club put in to achieve that goal. Therefore, I have no doubts whatsoever."
Guardiola has previously stated that he would immediately leave Manchester City if there was evidence that management was not honest about financial activities. When asked whether he agreed with Guardiola's statement, Maresca chose not to make the same commitment. He said, "I want to discuss this issue after we win the appeal. At the moment, all discussions are meaningless because I don't have enough information. I believe in the club and the people here. That is the reason I came to Manchester City."
Maresca also explained that the entire team was aware of the gravity of the situation they were facing, but they had to focus on the game and ignore the noise outside. He added, "Our position at the top of the Premier League standings with perfect results from the start of the season is motivation to maintain a positive spirit."
Ahead of the match against Liverpool which will take place on October 11, Maresca provided an update regarding the condition of the squad. He confirmed that striker Erling Haaland had recovered after asking to be taken off while playing for the Norwegian national team in the international break.
What happened next
Manchester City will now focus on the appeal process while preparing to face Liverpool in the sixth week of the Premier League. Maresca, who has just taken over the role of coach, is expected to lead the team well and maintain their performance at Ngoại hạng Anh. A positive result in this match could be a momentum for the club to overcome issues off the field.
