Manchester United experienced a very disappointing start to the season in the 2026-2027 Premier League, winning only 6 points from the first 6 matches. This result makes them have the worst record in the last 40 years in domestic competition. In their most recent match, they were only able to draw 1-1 against Tottenham Hotspur despite having a number advantage after Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off.
In the six matches that have been played, the team coached by Michael Carrick has only managed to achieve one win, three draws and two defeats. They scored 9 goals but also conceded 11 times. With just 6 points, this is Manchester United's worst start since the 1986-1987 season, where they only had 4 points after the first 6 games. At that time, the points system in effect was two points for each win.
This season, Manchester United started the competition with a 0-2 defeat to Hull City on August 22. They then won 5-2 over Ipswich Town, but in the next four matches, they were unable to achieve victory with a draw against Everton (2-2), losing to Manchester City (0-1), and drawing with Fulham (1-1) and Tottenham (1-1).
In the match against Tottenham, United managed to take the lead through Bryan Mbeumo's goal in the 73rd minute. However, after Bentancur was sent off, they were unable to take advantage of this advantage. In fact, in the added minute, Dominic Solanke managed to score an equalizer for Tottenham, making Manchester United lose three points at Old Trafford.
Gary Neville, former Manchester United defender, expressed his concern about his team's performance. He emphasized that the three-week break should have provided new energy, but in reality, the team did not show enough enthusiasm to play. He also stated that although fans can accept losing, they cannot tolerate boring and less aggressive games.
Neville noted that many players who had previously performed well now appeared to have lost confidence, and was concerned that the team seemed to be under too much pressure due to expectations. Despite this, he believes Carrick still has the support of fans, but needs to quickly find a solution to overcome this crisis.
With this result, Manchester United must immediately improve their performance if they want to compete at the top of the Premier League, before it is too late. With a busy schedule ahead, every match will be crucial for them.
