Manchester City face a challenge in retaining Elite Development Squad coach Ben Wilkinson, who has attracted interest from League One and Championship clubs for the roles of head coach and assistant.

Manchester City currently face the challenge of retaining Elite Development Squad coach Ben Wilkinson this summer, with interest in the 39-year-old emerging from League One clubs, overseas and the Championship. Wilkinson has been a key figure in City's academy structure for a number of years, having been promoted from U18s Head Coach to lead the Elite Development Squad in 2024 after guiding the academy side to success in the FA Youth Cup. Since then, he has worked closely with figures from the first team including Pep Guardiola, taking part in the squad for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and overseeing the integration of academy talent into the senior environment.

League One clubs are understood to see Wilkinson as a credible head coaching candidate, while several Championship sides have also shown an interest in taking him on as a first-team assistant – this interest reflects the growing reputation he has built within the City coaching pipeline over the past few seasons. According to Simon Bajkowski and Alex James of the Manchester Evening News, Manchester City face the challenge of keeping Ben Wilkinson this summer amid interest from the head coach from League One and overseas, while Championship clubs are also interested in making him an assistant.

The scope of this interest shows how highly Wilkinson is regarded outside the club, with his work developing academy graduates such as Nico O’Reilly and Ryan McAidoo earning praise from senior figures including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, who recently named McAidoo as one of the most exciting young talents developed under Wilkinson. Wilkinson's departure would be a significant loss for City's coaching pipeline, with the EDS head coach having been central to a pathway that has produced first-team players in increasing numbers in recent seasons.

The club has previously shown a willingness to promote coaches from within when senior academy figures leave, such as when Wilkinson himself replaced Brian Barry-Murphy as EDS coach. Any exits this summer would likely trigger a similar reset, with City's academy department continuing to be seen as one of the most productive in English football under the wider structure of the City Football Group.
