London City Lionesses achieved a very impressive 6-1 win over Tottenham in the Women's Super League on Sunday. Coach Eder Maestre stated that this result could be an important turning point for his team. In that match, Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani each scored two goals, while Danielle van de Donk and Delphine Cascarino also managed to get their names on the scoreboard.

The visiting team was leading 3-0 until the first half. Putellas opened the scoring in the third minute and added her tally in the 34th minute, having previously scored her first WSL goal in a 2-0 win over Brighton. With this performance, Putellas now has 49 goal contributions in his last 50 appearances at club and international level, with details of 28 goals and 21 assists for London City, Barcelona and the Spanish national team.

London City has now collected 12 points from the five matches they have played, and Maestre feels that this landslide victory will provide a big boost for the entire team. "The three points remain the same as in every game, but a win like this can be a game-changer, in terms of showing everyone that we are fighting hard," said Maestre. "However, we also need to remain humble. The teams that are used to being at the top are still there. I am very happy that we achieved our targets. When you have players like this, it is important to find chemistry and that takes time. This is a process, and we are building something strong."

Meanwhile, Tottenham, who previously did not lose in the first four matches of the 2026-27 season by collecting 10 points, had to face the bitter reality. Coach Martin Ho considered that his team's performance was very bad and unacceptable. "Very bad, unacceptable from us as a group. In defense, we didn't win the first or second ball. In duels, we were also weak. We have to move on immediately," said Ho. "The team collectively has to take responsibility and it starts with me, I take responsibility for this. We didn't perform well, but that can't be the level we played at. Everyone will be disappointed – it's not the level we expected. We conceded six goals and don't want to do that."

In another match on Sunday, Brighton also achieved a landslide victory with a score of 5-1 over Charlton Athletic who are still without points. Chelsea also managed to beat London rivals West Ham with a score of 3-0, thanks to goals from Melvine Malard, Kiera Walsh and Maika Hamano. Everton managed to beat Birmingham City with a score of 2-1, while Aston Villa drew 1-1 against Crystal Palace.

What happened next

With 12 points from five matches, London City Lionesses are now in a good position to continue their positive performance.
