Integrated Circle: Yury Semin Discusses Football Problems in Mordovia

According to Championat.

Background

Yury Semin, former Mordovia coach, observed that although there are good football academies, the lack of teams competing at an adequate level creates a negative cycle. Local clubs currently compete in lower leagues, which are not enough to develop young talent. With the existing infrastructure, there is hope for things to change if there is more attention to local football.

Why this is important

Yury Semin's statement regarding the challenges facing football in Mordovia highlights the importance of paying attention to the development of the sport in the region. With the stadiums built for the 2018 World Cup not being utilized optimally, this has an impact on the quality of matches and the development of young players. If there are no concrete steps to improve competition, the future of football in Mordovia could be at risk.

The former coach of the Mordovia club, Yury Semin, recently shared his views on the development of football in the republic. He noted that in 2018, Saranak hosted several World Cup matches and a new stadium with a capacity of 45 thousand seats was built. However, since then, the stadium has not been used optimally.

"After the World Cup, this stadium was only used by local clubs Mordovia, Tambov and Saranak. The Russian national team itself has only played at the Mordovia Stadium once in the last eight years, namely in 2020 against San Marino in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, where Russia won 9-0. This shows that there are many other stadiums that have not been used by the national team," said Semin.

Semin highlighted that the stadium in Saranak should be able to host high-quality matches, but this did not happen. He noted, "I don't know why this doesn't happen. Maybe Mordovia needs to pay more attention to football."

When asked about his feelings towards the condition of football in the region, Semin said that the current situation was quite worrying. Even though there are ambitious people working in this sector and there are good football academies, these conditions create a vicious circle. "Well-trained young people have no place to play at a higher level, because in the region there are no teams competing at an adequate level. Local clubs currently play in the Second League, which is considered too low for Mordovia."

He explained that although there is good football infrastructure and an improved base before the World Cup, challenges remain. "I certainly want to see Mordovia playing in the Russian Premier League (RPL). The fans in this region really deserve that. However, there is still a lot of work to be done," he added, referring to Semin's words as reported by RB Sport.

Semin coached Mordovia in the 2014/2015 season, where his team recorded 33 matches with 13 wins, five draws and 15 defeats. However, in 2020, the club was forced to disband due to financial problems. In 2021, FC Saranak was founded, but only lasted one season before closing in 2022. Currently, the region is represented by FC Shumbrat, which was founded in 2024 and currently plays in the Second League B, after 16 matches finishing third.

What happened next

In the future, it is hoped that there will be efforts from the authorities and local clubs to improve the quality of competition in the Russian Premier League. Semin indicated the need for more quality matches in Saranak to attract the attention of the national team and increase public interest in football. If this situation does not change, the potential of well-trained young players could be wasted.
