Rio Ngumoha's Bizarre Transfer Story: Liverpool, Bayern and a Bright Future

Rio Ngumoha had an incredible season with Liverpool, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the club's history and earning his first England cap. Despite interest from Bayern Munich, Liverpool confirmed that Ngumoha is not for sale and will be an important part of the upcoming season.

Youngster Rio Ngumoha is having an extraordinary season in 2025-26 with Liverpool. There was a special moment at St James’ Park last August when the promising winger scored a dramatic late goal, marking his Premier League debut with a winner after coming off the bench against Newcastle United. At the age of 16 years and 361 days, he became the youngest goalscorer in the club's history. His season ended at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa earlier this month, when Thomas Tuchel handed him his first senior cap for England in a World Cup friendly against New Zealand. It is a matter of great pride and appreciation for the impact he made after being called up for training camp in Florida.

Ngumoha's rapid rise provided little good news during Liverpool's largely joyless campaign, which ended with the sacking of head coach Arne Slot after two years in charge. No player aged 17 or under has enjoyed more first-team playing time for a Premier League club in the 2025-26 season than the former Chelsea academy player. Overall, he logged 952 minutes in all competitions (551 in the Premier League). By comparison, Arsenal's Max Dowman is next on 477 minutes (153rd in the league), followed by Brighton's Harry Howell on 260 minutes (93rd in the league). According to Opta, we have to go back to the 2012-13 season when Raheem Sterling logged 1,543 minutes to find a Liverpool player under the age of 18 who played more often. The only other player in the club's history to enjoy more minutes at that age is Michael Owen, with 1,645 minutes in 1997-98.

In short, it is rare for someone Ngumoha's age to be involved in that much senior football, especially at an elite club. Trent Alexander-Arnold was already 18 when he was handed his Liverpool debut by Jurgen Klopp in October 2016. Meanwhile, academy fellow Curtis Jones was just weeks shy of celebrating his 18th birthday when Klopp first called him up in January 2019. It was the pathway on offer at Anfield that convinced Ngumoha to leave Chelsea almost two years ago, and his striking progress has been acknowledged on numerous occasions since.

He went from playing at Under-18 level to the Premier League in less than 12 months. Against that backdrop, it is understandable why senior figures at the club were confused earlier this month by reports that Bayern Munich were exploring the possibility of signing him. The Athletic reported on June 5 that the frequent Bundesliga champions were targeting Ngumoha to strengthen their wide attacking options, but Liverpool insisted he was not for sale. Following the story, Sky Germany claimed that there had been productive talks between Bayern coach, Vincent Kompany, and Ngumoha's side before Bayern's hopes were dashed as Liverpool refused to negotiate.

This is the strangest transfer story of the season. More so because Liverpool never received an official approach from Bayern and, if Ngumoha felt uncomfortable, it was never conveyed to the club. Why do Bayern believe there is a possibility Liverpool will consider letting go of one of England's brightest prospects, who is under contract until the end of the 2027-28 season? How can you even determine the price? And given that Ngumoha has just finished the 2025-26 season as Liverpool's first-choice left winger, why is life as Luis Diaz's deputy in Munich considered a more attractive option? Additionally, Liverpool were also looking to buy, not sell, wingers at the time, following Mohamed Salah's departure and with Federico Chiesa also expected to leave.

Since then, they have signed Spanish international Victor Munoz from Osasuna for €40m (£34.5m; $45.4m) and stepped up their search for RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande with a €100m bid rejected by the German side. Ngumoha isn't going anywhere, with Liverpool determined to secure a longer contract for him after he turns 18 at the end of August. They see him having a bigger role next season under new head coach Andoni Iraola. The plan is to have four high-quality wing options, so Iraola can rotate and not overtax players physically.

There is recognition that a lack of pace and threat on the flanks cost Liverpool dearly last season, with Salah's production dropping and Cody Gakpo struggling to find form. Despite speculation regarding Gakpo's future, Liverpool have received no approaches for the Dutchman, who appears to have regained his confidence with his performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup. Now, if the Diomande deal materializes, it is expected that Ivory Coast international Munoz, Ngumoha and Gakpo will provide creativity from the wings in the coming season.

Part of the appeal for Liverpool in signing Munoz, who turns 23 next month, was his versatility, as he can play across the front line, and there is confidence that Ngumoha can operate on the right as well as the left, where he enjoys the majority of his playing time. It's a delicate balancing act between ensuring Ngumoha has a pathway to truly develop, but without relying too heavily on teenagers who are still learning. There have been reports that Ngumoha's side were frustrated that he made no more than nine starts in all competitions (with an additional 20 appearances from the bench) last season. In fact, some have suggested that, if Slot makes more use of him, he could force his way into Tuchel's 26-man squad for this World Cup, rather than simply being added to the group for the pre-tournament training camp.

However, this view is not in line with how Liverpool sees him. They believe their approach is the right one, as they have a duty to protect him physically and mentally during his first campaign in adult football. There is an argument that the way they handled Ngumoha actually helped, rather than hindered, Tuchel's attention, as he was able to finish the season strongly. Ngumoha's decision-making has improved significantly, but he is still raw and a work in progress, especially when it comes to off-the-ball play. As expected, when he started a match, he was often exhausted. He only completed 90 minutes on one occasion. Iraola is excited to help ensure he realizes his great potential. For Liverpool, the focus on Ngumoha has been a reminder of the challenges involved in recruiting, developing and retaining young talent. This is an era where footballers (and those close to them) are less willing to wait for playing time, and patience is hard to come by.
