Tottenham Hotspur finally managed to achieve their first win in the Premier League this season by beating Coventry City 3-1. This victory was a special moment for James Maddison, who made his debut after a long absence due to injury. Maddison, who has been absent since May 2025, returned to the starting lineup and immediately had a positive impact on his team.
Maddison, who previously suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and a shoulder fracture, showed his quality by scoring a beautiful goal in the 14th minute. He received a pass from Mohammed Kudus and fired a right shot from 20 yards which curled high past Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. This goal was greeted with cheers from the Spurs fans present at the stadium, indicating how important Maddison's contribution was to the team.
Maddison's presence on the field means a lot for Tottenham, who have only managed 12 wins from 57 matches in the Premier League since his last goal in February 2025. This victory is also an important step for coach Roberto de Zerbi, who hopes to lift the team's performance after several poor results.
Even though Spurs dominated the game, they had to face resistance from Coventry who equalized through a goal from Jack Rudoni. However, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies managed to add two more goals for Spurs, securing their victory. This was Spurs' first win at home after 37 league games, in which they managed just six wins, recording 10 draws and 21 defeats.
Maddison received a standing ovation when he was withdrawn in the 69th minute to make way for Conor Gallagher. Apart from that, Dejan Kulusevski also returned from injury and appeared as a substitute in the 87th minute, adding to the euphoria at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
"I spoke to the gaffer this weekend and felt it was the right time to return to the starting XI after a halting start to the season," said Maddison. "I just want to play well and show what I'm capable of and what this team has been missing over the last 18 months."
With this victory, it is hoped that Tottenham can build positive momentum ahead of their next match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. De Zerbi stated, "The presence of Maddison and Kulusevski brings a different atmosphere to the dressing room. We hope to continue to improve the team's performance in the future."
This victory was not only important in terms of numbers, but also raised the team's confidence which had slumped. Maddison and his colleagues now have the opportunity to improve their poor record in the league.
What happened next
With this victory, it is hoped that Tottenham Hotspur can continue the positive trend in future matches. Coach Roberto de Zerbi will likely continue to rely on Maddison as a key player in his team's strategy. Meanwhile, Spurs must remain focused on facing the challenges in the Premier League in order to achieve better results in the remainder of the season.
