England midfielder Jordan Henderson has officially joined Chelsea on a two-year contract after his contract with Brentford was mutually terminated. Henderson, who is 36 years old, was previously captain of Liverpool and has won many titles with the club, including the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
After leaving Liverpool, Henderson moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq before joining Dutch side Ajax in January 2024. He then returned to the Premier League with Brentford last summer, where he appeared in 32 games in England's top flight in the 2025-26 season.
"Considering the size of this club, the coach [Xabi Alonso] who I admire, and the quality of the players, this was a great opportunity that I couldn't turn down," said Henderson. "For me, it's about giving everything every day, both on and off the pitch, to help my teammates and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get started."
Henderson began his career at Sunderland and made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 0–5 defeat against Chelsea on 1 November 2008. Chelsea finished last season in 10th place in the Premier League, one point and one place behind Brentford, and failed to qualify for European competition.
Chelsea's new boss, Xabi Alonso, has been active in the transfer market, with Henderson becoming the tenth player to join the club this summer. Chelsea also agreed a club record deal worth £117 million to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers, 23, from Aston Villa. Additionally, 35-year-old England striker Danny Welbeck joined for a reported fee of £5 million from Brighton, and midfielder Valentin Barco arrived from Strasbourg.
