England have already secured their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup, only needing to play their final group game against Panama to confirm their position.
England have booked their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup after results in the other groups went their way on Friday night. Thomas Tuchel's side are top of Group L with four points, after an impressive win in their opener against Croatia and then a 0-0 draw against Ghana on Tuesday night.
This World Cup format, which includes 48 teams, means England's position in the last 32 is secure before they face Panama in their final match on Saturday. England are certain to finish in the top three of Group L, with Panama already eliminated because they lost head-to-head after losing to Ghana and Croatia.
With four points, England only need for the third-placed teams in four of the other 12 groups to finish with three points or less. Before Friday night, there were already two teams who had qualified: South Korea in Group A and Scotland in Group C, whose hopes of progressing depended entirely on another third-place team not picking up more than three points.
After Senegal crushed Iraq 5-0 to take third place in Group I with three points, Uruguay crashed out of Group H after losing 1-0 to Spain. These results ensure that England have secured their progress to the knockout stages before playing their final Group L match.
However, England still have homework to do to win Group L, and they will do it if they manage to beat Panama and do better than Ghana's result against Croatia. Considering that England and Ghana drew 0-0, the goal difference will determine who finishes in top position if they both get the same points. Ghana can unseat England if they beat Croatia with a big score. An England win, combined with a draw between Ghana and Croatia, or a Croatia win, would seal top spot.
In this scenario, they will face the third-placed team from one of the I/J/K groups in the round of 32. Currently, the teams that may face England are Senegal. If England finish as group runners-up, they will face the second-placed team from Group K - which will be decided in a penalty shootout between Colombia and Portugal. If Colombia don't lose, then England's opponent will be Portugal - assuming DR Congo don't win by a big score against Uzbekistan.
In the round of 16, England could face Group A winners, Mexico, at the Estadio Azteca which is at a high altitude. If they manage to overcome the test, Group C winners Brazil could be their opponents in the quarter-finals. Argentina, after starting well thanks to Lionel Messi's five goals, could be their potential semi-final opponents.
