In the final match of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, HLV Nolberto Solano from Pakistan admitted that his team was unable to maintain the intensity of the game after the break, which resulted in a 2-4 defeat to Vietnam at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta, on October 2. In a press conference after the match, Solano explained, "Pakistan allowed Vietnam to exploit many opportunities on the right side. Many of Pakistan's goals came from that position."
Even though Pakistan were ranked 198th and well below Vietnam who were ranked higher, they surprised everyone by scoring first through Mohid Ullah in the 32nd minute. However, after the break, Pakistan lost control of the game, and Vietnam managed to turn things around with goals from Nguyễn Hai Long and Nguyễn Hoàng Đức. Nguyễn Đình Bắc, who came on for another player at the start of the second half, contributed greatly by scoring the third goal and providing an assist for the final goal by Williams Minh Hoàng, which closed the match with a score of 4-2 for Vietnam.
"About Đình Bắc, sorry I'm not sure how to pronounce his name," Solano said when asked about Vietnam's performance and the number 9's contribution. "However, we know his presence has caused a lot of problems for our defense on the right side."
Although Đình Bắc usually played the full 90 minutes in previous matches, coach Kim Sang-sik decided to keep him on the bench to maintain his fitness ahead of the third-place match. However, the situation changed when Vietnam trailed by one goal in the first half, and the decision to play Đình Bắc proved effective.
On the other hand, Solano explained the challenges Pakistan faces in maintaining pressure. He said that his team was able to press and maintain a good defensive distance in the first half, but lost that ability after the break. "In the second half, we couldn't maintain the same pressure as in the first half," he said. "Previously, we worked well together in pressing and keeping the defense tight. However, when we started to advance, our defense tended to retreat, creating a lot of space for Vietnam to exploit."
Solano also praised the strength of the Vietnam team, calling them a strong candidate to win the title. Although his team was only able to finish in second place in the group, they had to settle for a match for third place against Malaysia. The final match will bring together Thailand and Indonesia on October 5.
What happened next
With this result, Pakistan needs to evaluate the team's strategy and fitness ahead of the next match at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. Meanwhile, Vietnam will try to maintain their positive momentum, especially with the contribution of players like Nguyễn Đình Bắc who showed impressive performance. The upcoming match will be an opportunity for both teams to correct mistakes and improve their position in the tournament.
