Georgiy Cherdantsev Reveals Offside Problems in the World Cup, Says Rule Changes are Needed

Georgiy Cherdantsev expressed his views on the offside issue at the 2026 World Cup, stressing the need for rule revision and the inaccuracy of the VAR system.

Georgiy Cherdantsev, a well-known sports commentator, recently expressed his views regarding the offside issue in the 2026 World Cup. In his comments, he referred to an incident that occurred in the 90+13th minute of the round of 16 match between Croatia and Portugal. Cherdantsev highlighted that the VAR system, although it looks sophisticated, still has significant shortcomings.

"The problem lies in how offside is determined. According to the rules, offside must be determined when the ball is passed to a player in a borderline position. The VAR system at this World Cup, watched by billions of viewers, draws the lines very well. However, we do not see any synchronization between these lines and when the ball touches the foot of the player who made the pass, or in Croatia's case, the player who is thought to have touched the ball last.

Even though there is a chip inside the ball, it does not register synchronization down to milliseconds between the touch of the ball and the player's position relative to the goal. Most final touches on the ball by an attacking player are determined visually, while offside is determined by the computer to within ten millimeters. This is an obvious asynchrony.

I think this tournament shows that while technology is great, they don't make football more transparent in terms of decision-making, especially in leagues like the RPL that don't use chips, where the offside line is drawn based on manually determined points.

As a result, the rules regarding determining offside need to be reviewed in depth. This should be a clear rule, whether it's Wenger's rule or something else, but we shouldn't cancel a goal just because of a tenth of a millimeter difference. The main principle in decision making during controversial situations is to give an advantage to the attacking team. Offsides that cancel out goals must be CLEARLY visible, not only to the computer, but especially to fans, players and coaches.

With so many football people on FIFA's technical committee, it shouldn't be difficult to create a formulation that doesn't undermine the basic principles of football on the one hand and encourages attacking play on the other. "In addition, it is clear that touching with hair or other parts of the body cannot be considered a touch to determine offside, this should be immediately included in the rules of the game after this Croatia incident," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

In second half stoppage time, Croatian defender, Josko Gvardiol, managed to equalize, but the goal was canceled by the Norwegian referee, Espen Eskås, for offside. After reviewing the VAR, it was discovered that before the ball reached Gvardiol, midfielder Mario Pašalić was already in an offside position after touching the ball given by striker Igor Matanović.
