Cesc Fabregas expressed his admiration for the resilience and maturity shown by Como after they managed to achieve a 3-1 win away from home against Torino. Fabregas noted that although Como fell behind after Che Adams scored, they managed to come back and turn the game around by showing strong character.
In that match, Como dominated possession of the ball, but had to trail for almost an hour after Torino's opener. Robert Sanchez, Como's goalkeeper, had to make several important saves to keep the goal gap to a minimum. The visitors were only able to equalize in the 81st minute when Jacobo Ramon, who had previously made a fatal mistake, scored with a header. After the equalizing goal, Como seemed to get a boost of enthusiasm, and Nico Paz and Martin Baturina added two more goals to ensure a 3-1 win.
"We still have to prove that we are a great team, but this is already a test of our maturity, because we will not play in the same way as last season," Fabregas told Sky Sport Italia. He emphasized that this was the fourth match in ten days, which was certainly not easy, but they showed patience, maturity and resilience and did not give up until the end.
Fabregas said that they couldn't always win with a score of 2-0, and even though mistakes were made, the responsibility to recover was on them. In addition, he huddled with the players after the match to provide motivation. "I told them that we are a family, we must find every solution to face the new situation in Como. We must not forget that this is the first time in the club's history that we have faced a situation like this. However, we must remain ready to face Venice on Sunday," he added.
This match is a tough test for Como, especially considering that Torino is one of the best-performing teams in Serie A with three previous wins in a row. Fabregas explained that every defeat teaches a lesson and they learned a lot from previous defeats.
"Frosinone are a very disciplined team, while Torino waited for us with a low block and then counter-attacked. We felt unlucky to be behind for so long, because we hit the post twice and had one of our goals disallowed for just one centimetre. There were lots of chances, and we didn't deserve to be behind, but we are better now," explained Fabregas.
Como showed that they always collect more points in the second half of the season, and although they currently have Champions League commitments, they are four points better off compared to the same stage last year. However, when asked about their ambitions to compete for the Scudetto, Fabregas replied, "This is our first competition in Europe and we have to focus on one game at a time, while continuing to improve our game. This is a growth process, and we have to stay focused.
With the many challenges that exist, Fabregas reminded that it is the toughness and character of the players that will determine the team's success in the future.
What happened next
With this result, Como is expected to maintain their positive momentum in the upcoming matches in Serie A. Fabregas and his team need to continue to show resilience and maturity to face the busy schedule and improve their position in the standings.
