In a discussion on the Media Matters Anfield Index podcast, David Lynch expressed doubts about Liverpool's possibility of recruiting Lucas Bergvall, after the young player stated that he wanted to leave Tottenham Hotspur. Lynch felt Bergvall's performance at Spurs was not satisfactory enough to be Liverpool's target.

Liverpool's search to strengthen their midfield continues to attract names from across the Premier League and Europe. However, one of the players discussed in the Media Matters Anfield Index podcast received a fairly skeptical response from David Lynch. While chatting with Dave Davis, Lynch was asked whether Liverpool could reconsider their interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall after reports the 20-year-old wanted to move. Davis suggested that Tottenham may need to sell some players to raise funds, given they are linked with big outlays. He said, "David Ornstein revealed that Lucas Bergvall had actually told them he wanted to move." Davis also added that Bergvall had previously been of interest to Liverpool before joining Spurs. "Liverpool have been watching him. They first saw him before he moved to Spurs," he explained. With this context, questions arise. If Liverpool have admired Bergvall before and now the player is available, would they consider signing him again? Lynch confirmed that Liverpool had previously been interested in Bergvall, but his personal assessment of the player was harsh. "I've never seen him play well, even once." That's the essence of Lynch's response. He doesn't deny Liverpool's historical interest, but has serious doubts that Bergvall showed enough at Tottenham to be a serious target now. Lynch added: "To be honest, maybe I've missed games when he's played well, or maybe I don't watch enough Tottenham." Even with the caveat, his gaze remained firm. "I've never really seen him play and thought, Wow, this kid is amazing." One of Lynch's strongest arguments relates to Bergvall's current status at Tottenham. He suggested that the player's desire to leave may not just be a matter of ambition or a new challenge, but perhaps Spurs have already let him know that Bergvall will struggle for game time. "I think he was probably told he wasn't going to be the first choice." The statement is important. Liverpool is trying to build a midfield that can meet Andoni Iraola's demands. If Bergvall is not guaranteed a clear role at Tottenham, Lynch questioned whether he could be considered a Liverpool-level signing. "If he's not good enough to fit into Spurs' midfield, then he's certainly not good enough for Liverpool either." Sharp assessment, but based on squad planning rather than hype. Lynch added, “He was signed by the Spurs and is known as a huge talent.” However, that status alone does not seem to be enough to convince him that Liverpool must act. "He just doesn't look very good." Even so, Lynch still leaves room for uncertainty. "I might be completely wrong about this, and he'll probably prove me wrong wherever he goes." However, the conclusion is clear. Although Liverpool have been keeping tabs on Bergvall, the midfielder's current situation at Tottenham does not make him an obvious target. For Liverpool, the process of developing the midfield is still ongoing. Curtis Jones' future remains uncertain, Alexis Mac Allister has also been mentioned as one to watch, and the club continues to monitor the profile of young players. However, based on Lynch's comments to Davis, Bergvall feels more like an old relationship rekindled by circumstance rather than a move Liverpool are expected to aggressively pursue. Based on discussions at Anfield Index, the message conveyed was very clear. Liverpool may have liked Lucas Bergvall once, but that doesn't mean they should sign him now.
