Cristiano Ronaldo, a football player from Portugal, now leads the voting for the best Quả Bóng Vàng (Ballon d'Or) of all time with 62% of the vote. This makes him far ahead of his eternal rival, Lionel Messi, who only got 13% of the vote. This selection was an initiative of organizers Quả Bóng Vàng to honor the award's seven-decade history.
This voting is known as B.O.A.T. (Ballon d'Or Of All Time) and is aimed at finding the best version of each player in the years they each won the award. The 2008 season was the best year for Ronaldo, when he won the English league title and Champions League with Manchester United, as well as getting the first Quả Bóng Vàng in his career. In this selection, Messi took second place with his version from 2012, where he scored 91 goals, setting a record for the number of goals in a calendar year. Messi's version from 2023, which is linked to the success of the Argentine national team in winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, came in third with 9% of the vote.
The voter list includes 10 players who have won Quả Bóng Vàng at least twice. Apart from Ronaldo and Messi, there are also legendary names such as Alfredo Di Stefano, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Michel Platini, Marco van Basten, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Kevin Keegan and Ronaldo Nazario. This selection rule makes competition not only between players, but also between different seasons of the same player.
Messi has eight seasons included on the list, which causes the distribution of votes in his favor to be more spread out. Meanwhile, Ronaldo's version from 2008 managed to gain greater attention from voters. Apart from the 2008 season, Ronaldo also received votes for his version in 2007 and 2016, with percentages of 7% and 2% respectively.
Unlike the traditional Quả Bóng Vàng determined by an international jury, B.O.A.T. opens the opportunity for fans to vote online. Each vote costs one euro (around 29,000 rupiah) and participants can vote without limit on the number. The voting is scheduled to end at midnight October 25, the day before the awards night which will be held in London on October 26. This means that the election results reflect support in this voting system and are not representative of all football fans.
The rivalry between Ronaldo and Messi also continues on the pitch even though both of them are no longer playing in Europe. Ronaldo currently plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, while Messi plays for Inter Miami in the United States. Both are still chasing the milestone of 1,000 goals in their careers, despite their long-standing rivalry regarding personal and team achievements.
What happened next
With this result, Ronaldo will likely continue to receive recognition for his achievements, both in the Saudi Arabian League and on the international stage. Meanwhile, Messi, who is currently playing in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, may try to improve his performance so he can compete again in a similar election. This selection also opens up further discussion about the legacy of both players in the world of football.
