Background

Luka Vuskovic, 19 year old defender, previously played for Tottenham Hotspur before officially joining Brighton. This transfer marks an important step in his career, where he is expected to develop further in a supportive environment such as Brighton. With experience in Europe's top leagues, Vuskovic has the potential to be a key player in Brighton's long-term project.

Why this is important

The recruitment of Luka Vuskovic is a significant step for Brighton & Hove Albion in strengthening their defense in the Premier League. With a club record fee, Vuskovic is expected to make a big contribution and help the team in achieving their targets in the coming season. Apart from that, this transfer shows Brighton's ambition to compete at the highest level of English football.

Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that they have officially signed Luka Vuskovic, Croatia international defender, from Tottenham Hotspur. The 19-year-old joins for a club-record fee of £46 million (equivalent to $61.5 million; €54 million). Vuskovic has signed a five-year contract with the option of a one-year extension.

News about this transfer was previously revealed by The Athletic in June, which stated that Brighton had submitted a bid of £30 million for Vuskovic. However, better offers were rejected before a deal was finally reached following the sale of Dutch international centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham for £52m. With possible additions, the total fee for Vuskovic could reach £50 million. Tottenham also have a 20 percent resale clause as well as the right to match the offer if there is a sale in the future.

Brighton expressed their excitement by marking the transfer on their official social media account, "We are delighted to confirm the signing of defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur!"

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler commented on the signing: "Luka has started his career very well — we have watched his development closely. Last season he showed that he can play at a very high level and we want to help him develop that in our environment. Although there has been a lot of outside talk about his arrival, he is still a young man who will need time to adapt to the demands of playing at Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident he will be able to cope."

Vuskovic began his career at Hajduk Split, making his senior league debut two days after his 16th birthday in February 2023. He spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Polish club Radomiak Radom, before joining Belgian Pro League side Westerlo on loan for the 2024-25 season. His impressive performances at Westerlo brought him to Tottenham. Vuskovic also impressed in his third loan spell at Hamburg last season, where he scored six goals in 28 league appearances in the German Bundesliga. He has also won six caps for Croatia, including an appearance at the World Cup last June when they lost 4-2 to England in their opening group stage match.

Brighton don't usually spend this much on young players, but they have made an exception for a prodigious talent who is considered one of the most promising centre-back prospects in world football. Although Vuskovic has so far never made an official appearance for Tottenham after moving from Hajduk Split in February 2025, Brighton provides an opportunity for Vuskovic to show his abilities. With a transfer fee that might be considered high, Vuskovic is still seven years younger than Van Hecke and has huge potential to develop. Given Brighton's track record in player development, it is not a stretch to think that they would benefit significantly from Vuskovic in the future. He will compete for playing time with two other new signings in Brighton's centre-back revitalization process, namely Pascal Struijk who came from Leeds United for around £18 million, and Michael Svoboda from Venice for £4.3 million, after Adam Webster was released at the end of last season.

What happened next

After joining Brighton, Vuskovic will focus on adapting to the team's style of play and adapting to competition in the Premier League. Coach Fabian Hurzeler will likely provide regular playing opportunities to develop Vuskovic's abilities further. With the experience he has, it is hoped that Vuskovic can be an important part of the team's strategy for this season.
