The 2026-27 Premier League season started with an unexpected twist. After Arsenal managed to beat Coventry City, many hoped that similar results would be seen in other matches. However, Saturday brought surprising news as Hull City managed to beat Manchester United, and Ipswich Town picked up a win against Sunderland, who were last season's surprise team. Leeds also recorded a late win over Nottingham Forest. However, the biggest surprise came from Brentford, who looked very impressive by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0.
Brentford's victory was not just about the score, but also the dominance shown by Keith Andrews' team against a Tottenham team filled with expensive stars. Spurs do have a lot of new players in their squad, and their coach, Roberto De Zerbi, made some questionable decisions in his line-up. Without captain Micky van de Ven and World Cup star Pedro Porro, Tottenham appeared to struggle to cope with Brentford's organized play.
Brentford showed better control of the game, even better than Arsenal when they faced a promoted team. It was a solid performance and showed the strength of a team that missed out on the chance to participate in Europe last season. With performances like this, Brentford fans have the right to expect more for this season.
In this season, Brentford have had consistency in their squad and coaching staff for the first time in a long time. This is Andrews' second season after replacing Thomas Frank, and he has made several important changes, including bringing in new players such as Nathan Collins, Kevin Schade, Igor Thiago and Dango Ouattara. Mamadou Sangare also put in a superb performance on his debut against Spurs.
Brentford showed good understanding in attacking and capitalizing on opponents' mistakes. The first goal came when Sangare took advantage of empty space to score. The second goal was no less brilliant, where Brentford managed to take advantage of the negligence of Spurs' back line. Overall, Brentford generated around four goal chances in this match, while Spurs were only able to create a small number of chances.
With a playing system that continues to develop and an increasingly mature understanding, Brentford looks ready to face the challenges in the Premier League this season. If they are able to turn a draw at home into a win and improve their away record, it is not impossible that Brentford will clinch a place in European competition. Andrews has full Premier League experience, and with the current squad, they could be a dark horse to reckon with in the league.
What happened next
With the momentum from this victory, it is hoped that Brentford can maintain their good performance in the upcoming matches. The next match will be an important test to see whether they can be consistent and compete with the other top teams in the Premier League. Brentford supporters certainly hope that their team can continue this positive trend and achieve better results than last season.
