Liverpool's victory over LASK with a score of 6-3 in the Champions League was the main highlight, especially thanks to the brilliant performance from Bradley Barcola. Before the match, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola faced questions about the form of Barcola and team-mate Florian Wirtz, who are both expected to make a significant contribution after a less than satisfactory start to the season. Iraola assured that he has full confidence in the abilities of his players, even though they were bought at exorbitant prices, namely £123 million for Barcola and £116 million for Wirtz.
In the match which took place in Linz, Austria, Wirtz showed a good performance by contributing one assist, but the main highlight of the night was Barcola. In the 238th match of his career, Barcola scored his first hat-trick, which was the difference in the match. Even though he could have scored more goals, the first two goals were scored with good technique using his right and left foot, plus a third goal after the break.
After the match, Iraola expressed his happiness with Barcola's performance, "I'm very happy for Bradley. You asked me about the lack of scoring contributions from him and Florian, but today they both played really well and made the difference. Bradley is always a threat, especially in one-on-one situations, and helped us control the game."
Iraola also emphasized that this performance was very important for Barcola and Wirtz's confidence. "Scoring a hat-trick in the Champions League is a very difficult thing. I can feel that he (Barcola) is in good condition ahead of the match," he added.
Liverpool appeared dominant in the first half, scoring three goals straight away and creating 19 shots, the most recorded by any team in the first half of a Champions League match since the 2003-04 season. However, in the second half, Liverpool tended to lose focus and conceded three goals, even though the main job had been completed.
Amidst the euphoria of this victory, there are several other positive notes. Defender Jeremie Frimpong scored one goal and provided two assists, while Kostas Tsimikas also contributed two assists. Ronald Araujo, who had just joined the club, scored his first goal. Lewis Koumas, who also performed brilliantly, scored a goal and became the youngest player to score and provide an assist in the Champions League for Liverpool.
Even though Liverpool achieved a comfortable victory, they must be alert, considering that LASK comes with a poor record without a win in the last four matches. Former Liverpool player, Stephen Warnock, noted that this match did not fully reflect Liverpool's abilities, considering that LASK appeared passive in many moments. He also reminded that a bigger challenge awaits when Liverpool faces Brentford, a team that is currently in fourth place in the league and is unbeaten. "Barcola must be able to show a similar performance at Brentford, because that is the main reason they bought him," concluded Warnock.
What happened next
After this victory, it is hoped that Liverpool can continue their positive momentum in the Champions League and improve their performance in the domestic league. Manager Andoni Iraola will continue to monitor the development of Barcola and Florian Wirtz, who are expected to make a bigger contribution in the next match. This victory also gives new hope for a better season for Liverpool in European competition.
