Aston Villa Warned Regarding Visit Rwanda Sponsorship

According to Bbc.

Background

Aston Villa, as a Premier League club, has a responsibility to maintain their image amidst this controversy. The deal with Visit Rwanda replaces previous sponsor Betano, demonstrating the club's focus on developing their brand. However, with the allegations against Rwanda, clubs must be careful not to sacrifice their values for financial gain.

Why this is important

Aston Villa's £20 million-a-year sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda has caused significant controversy among human rights observers. Many are concerned that the Premier League club is engaging in 'sportswashing', which could damage their reputation with fans and the wider public. With increasing attention to human rights issues, this move could impact the club's image and their relationship with sponsors in the future.

Aston Villa recently received a warning regarding its new £20m-a-year sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda. This deal is seen as an attempt by the African country to carry out "sportswashing" over its record of human rights violations. In this long-term agreement, Visit Rwanda will replace Betano as sponsor on the front of Villa's men's, women's and academy team jerseys.

Although the Premier League club considers the move "the most important sponsorship deal in the club's history", Felix Jakens, head of campaigns for Amnesty International UK, expressed deep concerns. Last month, the Democratic Republic of Congo filed a case against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing its neighbor of violating various international agreements. Congo claims that Rwanda has sent troops and supported armed groups to carry out unauthorized military operations on its territory following the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Rwanda has long denied evidence that it supports rebel groups in the conflict in Congo, but UN experts and Western governments claim that Rwanda provides support to M23, a major armed group in eastern Congo. Jakens said, "It is nothing new that Rwanda uses sportswashing to divert attention from its appalling human rights record. [Aston Villa] should be aware that Rwanda is seeking to leverage this partnership to create a positive image. The country is notorious for arbitrary detention, torture and the suppression of free speech – these are abuses that occur at home. We are witnessing bloodshed before our eyes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda is playing a significant role in exacerbating that conflict – both through its support for M23 rebels and its direct military action in East Congo. Rwandan sportswashing needs to be highlighted, and we want [Aston Villa] and the Premier League to play a role in this.”

Villa were required to replace Betano after Premier League clubs agreed to withdraw betting sponsorship from the front of their shirts at the end of last season. Francesco Calvo, the club's President of Business Operations, who recently took over from Chris Heck, negotiated the deal. Calvo said in a club statement, "This is a very exciting partnership for [Aston Villa] and symbolic of the club's expansion and growth into international markets. There are opportunities for collaboration, learning and innovation, and we look forward to working with Visit Rwanda to deliver meaningful activation through tourism, investment and sports development."

[Aston Villa] have been contacted for further comment on this matter.

What happened next

Aston Villa will likely face pressure to explain their decision regarding the deal, especially from human rights groups. In the context of the transfer market, clubs may need to consider this reputational impact when recruiting new players in the next summer transfer window. The public response and reaction from fans will also be an important factor in determining the next steps taken by the club.
